The True incremental Backup System is enterprise network backup system software for both commercial and open source operating systems, network file systems, and global file systems. An extensive array of backup clients are available in both 32 bit and 64 bit architectures. All platforms can be backed up in a True incremental forever fashion with multi-level synthetic backup consolidation to enable fast restore times. A single TiBS backup server can simultaneously support clients running OpenAFS, FreeBSD, Linux, NetBSD, NFS, Mac OS, UNIX, Windows and More...
Teradactyl provides solutions for backing up filers in both NAS and SAN environments. Our perpetual True incremental Backup technology can eliminate periodic network, SAN, or direct attached full backup dumps. With our patented solutions, only True incremental data needs to be transferred to the backup system on a perpetual basis. Backups via NFS were once considered inefficient but are now practical.
TiBS has some real advantages over traditional NDMP approaches. We checksum data transfers, writes, and restores. We can audit tape media for data integrity eliminating the dump and pray approach. With multi-level synthetic backup consolidation, we can provide more storage strategies to reduce media consumption and share expensive tape drives with other functions.
More organizations are becoming discontent having to backup their filers with another filer or use a NDMP approach. Many institutions now seek to simplify the process by backing up all their filers to Linux, UNIX, or other servers. This is known as filer to server backup. Teradactyl can perform this function in a perpetual True incremental mode for supported filers. Learn more about alternatives in backup for mass storage systems...
Global file systems, such as OpenAFS, have been in use by governments and education for decades due to their location independence, scale, high availability, security, and transparent migration capabilities for data. OpenAFS can serve a broad array of systems including Linux, Mac OSX, UNIX, and Windows. Industry is catching on with OpenAFS running at one of the largest U.S. Banking Institutions and other world class commercial organizations. Teradactyl is the dominant global provider of commercial backup solutions for OpenAFS cells. Learn more about both OpenAFS and TiBS support for this amazing open source platform...
The True incremental Backup System has been designed for restore of large operational environments. Unlike most backup software and appliances available today, which are optimized solely for data ingestion, TiBS architecture includes design elements to facilitate mass restore operations. TiBS synthetic backup consolidations are designed to keep large amounts of client data contiguous. TiBS is a single pass, not a multiple overlay restore process. TiBS restore operations can run in parallel from disk, tape, or both. TiBS provides the ability to concurrently run multiple processes and from multiple backup storage sub-systems simultaneously. TiBS backup servers can even be replicated during a site emergency to permit multiple servers to simultaneously restore mass systems in parallel. Learn about TiBS Restore Capabilities
Teradactyl LLC. is a U.S. based software engineering company specializing in backup and disaster recovery of large distributed processing systems. Founded over a decade ago, Teradactyl develops solutions for leading U.S. Universities, DOE National Laboratories, High Performance Computing Centers, and other agencies involved in Central Systems and Infrastructure.
The True incremental Backup System® is an advanced enterprise network backup software application. TiBS is designed to provide organizations, after an initial full backup, with the ability to run True incremental Backups from large numbers of systems in perpetuity. Those changes are consolidated with other data in the backup system to produce not only full synthetic backup volumes but also a variety of intermediate level synthetic backup volumes. These intermediate level volumes and patented intelligent consolidation technology, will significantly reduce backup storage sub-system requirements in large data environments. Unlike traditional rotating Full and incremental backup cycles, TiBS has the ability to conduct ongoing True incremental backups while maintaining expedient restore times. In addition, TiBS typically removes 90% or more of the impact of backup operations on the networks and clients. Learn more about Teradactyl's leading Synthetic Backup Consolidation Technology...
The True incremental Backup System can synthetically generate Full Backup Volumes, Cumulative Incremental Backup Volumes including Differential Backup Volumes, and Partial Cumulative Incremental Backup Volumes. Consolidations can be time based or triggered by intelligent compression algorithms. Understanding the terminology will help to make decisions involving storage capacity, storage platforms, level backup strategy, data granularity, and data availability. This resource will also assist in understanding the critical benefits of our combined synthetic backup consolidation and intelligent compression solutions. Large institutions have learned that backup is not merely taking a copy to secondary storage and moving on to another task. Data assurance for backup systems needs to address data verification, fault detection, repair of data corruptions, isolation of faulty storage components, and the potential need to recover major components within the backup storage sub-system itself. TiBS has been designed to take these elements into account and has additional options to improve fault tolerance. Here is a brief summary of backup storage and some basic guidelines for our clients. We have also provided links to more detail about specific content.
Disk Backup Storage: Teradactyl does not sell proprietary hardware for disk based backups with the True incremental Backup System. We license software storage modules at a flat fee for each TiBS backup server regardless of storage capacity. These benefits translate to significant savings for our end users. TiBS performs checksum analysis on data when transferred across the network, written to storage, and transferred between storage pools. Data can be manually audited for integrity by backup system administrators. Our patented synthetic backup consolidation further verifies data before each lower level consolidation for faster error detection. Synthetically generated backup volumes can be reconstructed provided the data is available and intact. Disk, however, is not perfect, some guidelines should be followed in constructing your disk based storage to improve data assurance standards. Please refer to the TiBS Disk Library Interface (DLI) for more information...
Tape Backup Storage: Teradactyl also supports a wide array of tape technologies, hardware, and media formats. We license software storage modules at a flat fee for each TiBS backup server regardless of storage capacity. With robotic tape libraries, our clients do not have to pay additional software fees for adding slots, drives, or any other increases in capacity! TiBS employs a disk to disk to tape approach for all non-NDMP operations. This can be either a basic TiBS backup server disk cache or a TiBS disk library if desired. Data on tape is subject to the same rigorous verification standards mentioned for disk with the additional checks on writes to tape, cleaning checks, and limits on cartridge use. Lower level backup consolidations from data on tape provides another level of fault detection. Any synthetically generated backup volume, on disk or tape, can be reconstructed provided the data is available and intact. Data can be manually audited for integrity by backup system administrators. Tape mirroring at any or all backup levels is available at no charge. Tools for diagnostic analysis of errors in tape storage subsystems are available to our clients free of charge. Please refer to the TiBS Automated Tape Library Interface (ATLI) for more information...
Seamless Integrated Storage: Most of our clients now use a combination of the Disk Library Interface and the Automated Tape Library Interface to gain the benefits of each technology while mitigating the risks of either. With the exception of Partial Cumulative Incremental (PCI) Backup Volumes, used for both synthetic backup consolidation and intelligent compression on disk, all backup volumes can be stored on disk, tape, or both. PCI Backup Volumes can be replicated to tape but must be maintained on disk for processing. Most sites will store backup server configuration, databases, and other critical information on both technologies. With most restore requests pertaining to recent data, a substantial number of sites will choose to maintain older data on tape. Teradactyl gives our clients a multitude of options in the design of a seamless disk and tape integrated system. Please refer to the backup storage main page for more information...
TiBS includes a powerful tool known as storage pools. With TiBS administrators can define different classes of data and assign each class its own level backup strategy, data retention policy, and storage policies. TiBS permits administrators to precisely control data availability, cost, granularity, compliance, and security concerns. Storage sub-systems can be partitioned or physically independent. Policies for a given class of data can be divergent from other data in the system which can share or maintain their own storage pools. Administrative data, research & development, and operations data can all be maintained with unique requirements by the same backup server, multiple backup servers, single or multiple media types, and across multiple disk or tape storage arrays in virtually any fashion.
