Multi-Level & Multi-Volume Synthetic

Backup Consolidation

The patented TeraMerge multi-level & multi-volume synthetic backup consolidation process can merge True incremental Backups as well as multiple backup volumes already on the server.  Administrators can use this technology to create full backups, differential and other forms of cumulative incremental volumes, and partial cumulative incremental backup volumes. This extensive array of flexibility allows institutions to backup only new and modified files, integrating them with files on the backup server to create newly consolidated backups in a manner that is most suitable to their needs and budget.  The merge process generates all the multiple lower level synthetic backup consolidations without network interaction.

TeraMerge recycling dramatically reduces the daily burden that backups impose on networks and clients. Only True incremental changes need to be transferred from the target clients to the backup server.  This process results in better user response times and extends capabilities of other computing resources -- a far more efficient use of backup hardware and your computing environment! By reducing the overhead and adding parallel processes, TiBS can grow with your rapidly increasing data size.

TeraMerge is now used in four very important ways . . .
1
Network Synthetic Cumulative Incremental: This unique type of backup takes a True incremental backup from a backup client and consolidates it with previous Cumulative Incremental backup data on a backup server to produce a new Cumulative Incremental backup.
2
Synthetic Cumulative Incremental: A special type of Cumulative Incremental that will consolidate some or all of the Backup Volumes that have been created since the most recent backup at level n-1 or lower on the Backup System. This process is performed by a Backup System with no interaction with the Primary Storage on the target system. The resulting backup volume contains the same data as one that would have been taken from the target system for that period of time.
3
Synthetic Full Backup: A type of Full Backup that consolidates Incremental Backups with a previous Full Backup to produce a current Full Backup. This process is performed by a backup system with no interaction with the target system. The resulting backup volume contains the same data as one that would have been taken from the target system at that period in time.
4
Synthetic Partial Cumulative Incremental Backup: A specialized form of Incremental Backup which backs up the files that have been modified or created since the most recent backup at the same level or lower (level n or lower).. This process is performed by a backup system with no interaction with the target system. The resulting backup volume contains the same data as one that would have been taken from the target system at that period in time.

The basics behind how TeraMerge works . . .

TeraMerge® is the patented synthetic backup consolidation process by which two backup volumes already on a backup server are merged to form a new backup volume.

  • The first volume contains data that has been changed or created between times t1 and time t2.
  • The second volume contains data that has been changed or created between time t2 and time t3.
  • The new backup volume will contain data that has been changed or created between time t1 and time t3.

A backup server generates new backup volumes with minimal impact on backup clients and data networks.

TeraMerge® Multi-Level & Multi-Volume Synthetic Backup Consolidation Process

V(t0 - t1) + V(t1 - t2) + . . . + V(tn-1 - tn) = V(t0 - tn)

Implement multiple level backup strategies to reduce backup server processing & storage costs.  Consolidate any number of disk volumes with an optional tape volume to generate new partial cumulative, cumulative or full synthetic backups with no network or client interaction.  This technology is only available with the True incremental Backup System®

Advantages of TeraMerge Synthetic Backup Consolidation

Eliminates Periodic Full Network Backups

Incremental backup data can be merged with older full backup data to create a current full backup volume with absolutely no interaction with the backup client. New full backup volumes can be created at any time!

Multiple Levels of Synthetic Backup Consolidation Available

The process can work on multiple levels similar to the way a traditional level backup system does. The difference is that TeraMerge® generates new tapes for all lower backup levels with no interaction with backup clients. Other products offer backup consolidation. The products operate only on two levels: full and incremental. Don't change your level backup strategy because of other products' software limitations. Multiple levels of merging will reduce tape costs and support greater amounts of data per backup server. Get the level backup strategy your environment demands with TiBS.

Reduces the Impact of Incremental Backups

Only the files that have changed since the last backup are taken from the backup client. The most recent changes from the backup client are merged with cumulative incremental data located on the backup server's disk cache. Traditional level backup systems will take multiple copies of the same file even though the data has not changed.

Unique, Built-in Redundancy

In a traditional system, the loss of a single tape creates the possibility of loss of data in the restore. TeraMerge® provides redundancy without having to mirror or stripe tapes. Even greater redundancy can be achieved when multiple backup levels are used. TiBS can easily recover from a tape failure by reverting back to the tapes that were used to produce the failed tape volume.

Built-in Data Verification

Data is always verified by the TeraMerge® process. Administrators are alerted to problems with tapes or tape drives and can recover corrupted data before it is too late. Additional verification and data replication options are available to meet even the most stringent criteria. Custom configurations are available. No matter what your requirements may be - TiBS protects your data!

Teradactyl is an industry leader in Synthetic Consolidation

Teradactyl developed synthetic consolidation years ago as the basis for the True incremental Backup System. While companies are rushing to claim they have this amazing new technology, Teradactyl continued to refine the process to extend to multiple backup levels. This further extends the edge that Teradactyl has over other solutions. Multiple level consolidations give you faster restore times for requests between full consolidations by providing both cumulative incremental and differential backup volumes.
