Commercial
Solutions & Support for OpenAFS |
| If
your currently using the Andrew File System (AFS), OpenAFS, or considering making the switch to this
highly secure and incredibly flexible file system, you probably are
seeing backup solution providers that are dropping support for OpenAFS
and Freeware groups that work on updates as time permits. Is that
adequate for your disaster recovery requirements? Can you wait for
backup software updates while the developers work on other projects?
How can you convince yourself that they will keep pace with the ever
increasing speed of OpenAFS development? Do they employ synthetic
consolidation or verify data integrity in the backup system? We do!
Teradactyl is the #1 commercial vendor for AFS backup! |

community pending projects |
The
following are items known to be in progress, and, where available,
a point of contact.
Hierarchical
Storage Management Integration
Provide support for storing AFS files into a HSM system (DMF is
the first targeted HSM system). Contact Ken Hornstein (kenh@cmf.nrl.navy.mil)
for more information. This project has been made possible in part
by support from SGI.
Disconnected
AFS Operations
Provides the ability to use AFS while not connected to a network.
Code is in the branch "disconnected" in the OpenAFS
CVS repository, in need of testing and further work. Contact Derrick
Brashear (shadow@dementia.org)
if you'd like to work on this.
FreeBSD
port
Server ported. Cache manager support is not yet complete.
NetBSD
port
Server ported. No timeline available.
OpenBSD
port
In progress. Cache manager works but not recommended for production
use.
Better
Documentation
In progress. Contact Russ Allbery if you'd like to contribute
(rra@stanford.edu).
Kerberos
v5 and multiple encryption types
In progress. Add Kerberos v5 and additional encryption type support.
Contact Marcus Watts or Matt Benjamin
RxTCP
In progress. Implement Rx API on top of TCP/IP in order to gain
performance on high speed networks. Contact Ken Hornstein (kenh@cmf.nrl.navy.mil)
for more information.
HostAFSd
In progress. Implement an AFS server that exports portions of
the local file system to AFS clients. Contact Derrick Brashear
(shadow@dementia.org).

OpenAFS
News from http://www.openafs.org/

7-Apr-2008 - OpenAFS 1.4.7pre3 release candidate available
OpenAFS 1.4.7pre3 is the third release candidate for the 1.4.7 release. The OpenAFS 1.4 release series is targeted at providing a stable maintenance release series for users of all platforms except Windows.
-
22-Mar-2008 - OpenAFS 1.5.34 released
OpenAFS 1.5.34 provides the best user experience for Microsoft Windows users and is the most recent in the series of releases intended to provide new experimental features including the Demand Attach File Service, on other platforms including MacOS X, Linux variants, and UNIX. OpenAFS is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008.
-
20-Dec-2007 - OpenAFS 1.4.6 released
OpenAFS 1.4.6 is the seventh in a series of releases focusing on bugfixes for Unix platforms. It contains several fixes to the fileserver only since 1.4.5, and is otherwise identical to OpenAFS 1.4.5
-
20-Dec-2007 - OpenAFS Security Advisory 2007-003
OpenAFS fileserver versions 1.3.50 - 1.4.5, 1.5.0 - 1.5.27. Fileservers of affected versions can be crashed by a client-triggered race condition. Fixes are available in 1.4.6 and 1.5.28.
19-Apr-2007
- OpenAFS Security Advisory 2007-002
OpenAFS for Windows clients versions 1.3.64 - 1.3.99, 1.4.0 - 1.4.4,
1.5.0 - 1.5.18. When MIT Kerberos for Windows (any version) is installed
a user with the ability to alter the contents of the Kerberos v5
configuration profile can prevent Microsoft Windows from successfully
booting. This issue has been corrected in OpenAFS 1.5.19.
20-Mar-2007
- OpenAFS Security Advisory 2007- 001
Unix clients in OpenAFS versions before 1.5.17 and 1.4.4 allow a
potential privilege escalation via setuid functionality which can
be enabled by the client administration but is enabled by default
for the client's local cell. To avoid this issue, 1.5.17 and 1.4.4
have been issued with setuid disabled by default in all cases. |

Contribute
to the OpenAFS Community |
The
OpenAFS project suffers from the classic Open Source problem: more
requests than people can find time to work on. Few contributors
to OpenAFS are currently paid for their time, and those who are,
are funded by their employers (to whom OpenAFS is eternally grateful).
Frequently contributors' work is driven by critical bugs and site-specific
problems. Work on new development, non-critical bugs, code audits,
performance enhancements, and documentation is accomplished volunteers
in their spare time. Contribute
to the OpenAFS Fund.* |

Looking for Commercial OpenAFS Software Vendors |
Does your firm develop commercial software for OpenAFS platforms?
Teradactyl is seeking out all software providers whose products support the Andrew File System legacy AFS and/or OpenAFS to discuss potential teaming relationships and project management services. Teradactyl is encountering an increasing number of commercial and government entities looking for private corporations actively investing in development of commercial software for OpenAFS. If your firm fits this profile, please contact us. |
