TeraMerge®Technology
Reduces Impact of Network Backups
New
Technology Expands Customer Backup Strategies
ALBUQUERQUE,
NM - May 17, 2001 - Teradactyl, LLC. today announced immediate
availability of version 2.0 of the True incremental Backup System®
(TiBS) for AFS®, UNIX®, and Windows® platforms. TeraMerge® patented
synthetic consolidation is the core technology powering the TiBS
product. The process reuses data already on a backup server to
generate new tape volumes with minimal impact on clients and the
network. The technology is currently in use at Carnegie Mellon
University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
(top ranked by US News and World Report, April 9, 2001). TeraMerge
allows customers to:
Safely
remove periodic full backup processing from distributed computing
environments.
Reduce
the amount of incremental backup processing performed over existing
data networks.
Perform
90% or more of the backup function entirely on the backup server.
Reduce
data transfers on networks and backup clients by 10 times or more.
Generate
lower level backups during normal business hours with no impact
on other computing resources.
Increase
the amount of data that each backup server can support.
Reliably
recover from common tape media failures
Powerful
Data Redundancy
In
a traditional level backup scenario, even a single failed tape
volume can lead to lost information. Because TeraMerge creates
new backup volumes from existing backup volumes, the most recent
backup taken is completely redundant. TiBS recovers a failed tape
from the backup volumes that created it. Additional levels of
redundancy are available at significantly reduced costs compared
with tape mirroring and tape striping solutions available today.
Multi-Level
Merge Support Available
TeraMerge
can generate multiple levels of tape backup entirely on a backup
server. Regardless of the number of backup levels configured,
the impact on networks and backup clients remains the same. TiBS
overcomes the classic tradeoff in a traditional level backup system:
network loading vs. number of backup levels.
Target
Markets
TiBS
is marketed to medium and large size corporations, secondary education
and research institutions, and government agencies with medium
to large size distributed UNIX® and Windows® computing environments.
Organizations using AFS® will benefit even more from the application
of TeraMerge Technology to that product's backup format.
